Watching for artificial sweeteners in dissolvable tablets

Tip from u/KarmaPharmacy on Reddit. · Read the original post

One person found that the artificial sweeteners used in their dissolvable migraine and nausea tablets were triggering their hemiplegic migraines. After years of attacks, identifying ingredients like aspartame in their prescribed dissolvable medications helped pinpoint this trigger.

What you'll need

You'll need all of these.

  • The ingredient list on your medication leaflet or box
  • Your pharmacist, to ask about sweetener-free versions

Good to know

Sweeteners affect people differently, and many tolerate them fine. If you suspect a link, note what you took and how you felt, and talk to your pharmacist before switching. Avoid swapping between several rescue medications to dodge one ingredient, since frequent use of pain relief can lead to medication overuse headache.

What the research says

Research is mixed

  • [Alimentary trigger factors that provoke migraine and tension-type headache]. (2006)

A literature review indicated that aspartame has not been proven to precipitate headaches, and food generally plays a limited role as a trigger for migraine and tension-type headaches. Controlled trials identified alcohol and caffeine withdrawal as the most important nutritional precipitating factors, while general dietary restrictions have not been proven useful.

  • Diet and Headache: Part 1. (2016)

A narrative review found conflicting evidence regarding aspartame as a headache trigger, citing two positive and two negative provocation studies. Nonetheless, the authors concluded that certain ingredients may trigger attacks in susceptible individuals and that elimination diets can prevent headaches in patient subgroups.
