Cushioning salon sinks to prevent scalp and neck pain

Tip from tevapharm.com. · Read the original post

One person found that the hard edge of a hair salon washbasin pressing against the base of her skull could trigger head pain. Asking the stylist to place a rolled towel under the neck provides an easy buffer against the firm pressure. Bringing a small travel neck cushion or asking for an extra folded cape can work just as well.

What you'll need

You only need one of these — not all of them.

The original tip uses

What the research says

Research is mixed

  • The headache of challenge in our time: cervicogenic headache. (1990)

Cervicogenic headache begins in the posterior head and can be mechanically precipitated by neck movements or by external pressure applied to circumscribed points in the neck. Anesthetic blockade of the major occipital nerve stops this referred pain in areas where anesthesia was not directly administered.

  • Stroke at the Hairdresser's chair: A scoping review of the beauty parlor stroke syndrome. (2025)

A review of 54 beauty parlor stroke syndrome cases (79.63% female) found that 42 occurred during beauty parlor visits, where neck hyperextension during shampooing commonly caused headaches, dizziness, and equilibrium issues. The underlying etiologies frequently involved mechanical impingement and cervical artery dissection.
