Pressing cold spoons under the eyes for quick relief

Tip from @brainfogdaily_lr on Lemon8. · Read the original post

@brainfogdaily_lr found that gently pressing a frozen spoon under each eye helped take the edge off during an attack. Though holding cutlery to their face felt a bit unusual, the focused cold application provided noticeable comfort. A chilled gel pack or a damp cold cloth can offer a similar soothing sensation.

What you'll need

You only need one of these — not all of them.

The original tip uses

Two frozen metal spoons

or

Chilled gel eye mask

Ice cubes wrapped in a thin cloth

Splashing cold water under the eyes — no tool needed

Good to know

Chill the spoons in the fridge, not the freezer — intense cold can set off a sharp cold-pain response or rebound tension around the eyes. Press lightly and briefly. If your face feels tender to touch during an attack, rest the spoons near the skin rather than on it, and stop if it hurts.

What the research says

Research is mixed

  • TRPM8 and Migraine. (2016)

This mechanism-level review notes that the cutaneous cold sensor TRPM8 is required for cooling-based analgesia, though cold can also trigger migraines in humans and preclinical TRPM8 activation can both cause and alleviate headache behaviors. The review explores underlying receptor mechanisms rather than testing the direct application of a frozen spoon or cold cloth.
