Peppermint and lavender balm for headaches
Tip from Pinterest. · Read the original post
One person shared a recipe for creating a soothing headache relief balm at home. The mixture combines coconut oil with peppermint, lavender, and frankincense essential oils.
What you'll need
You'll need all of these.
- Coconut oil as the base
- Peppermint essential oil
- Lavender essential oil
- Frankincense essential oil
- A small clean jar or tin
Good to know
Strong scents soothe some people but can trigger nausea or worsen an attack in others, so test a tiny amount away from your face first. Patch-test for skin irritation and keep it away from your eyes. Peppermint and lavender oils are not advised for young children or during pregnancy without medical advice.

What the research says
Research is mixed
- Cutaneous application of menthol 10% solution as an abortive treatment of migraine without aura: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossed-over study. (2010)
In a crossover trial involving 35 people and 118 migraine attacks, topical menthol improved two-hour pain outcomes compared with placebo. This supports studying menthol, a peppermint component, but the trial used a menthol solution—not this homemade balm.
- [Effectiveness of Oleum menthae piperitae and paracetamol in therapy of headache of the tension type]. (1996)
A placebo-controlled crossover study of 41 people found that topical peppermint oil reduced tension-type headache intensity within 15 minutes. It tested a peppermint preparation in ethanol, not migraine or a coconut-oil balm.
- Lavender essential oil in the treatment of migraine headache: a placebo-controlled clinical trial. (2012)
In a small trial of 47 people with migraine, inhaled lavender was associated with greater headache-severity reduction than placebo. This is ingredient-level evidence for inhalation, not proof that topical lavender or the complete balm works.
